THE proposed redevelopment of Falmouth Wharves continues to attract opposition ahead of a decision expected next month.
Almost 100 people have now commented on The Fairhaven Shipping Company’s plans for the area, with the majority of them objecting to the proposals which include a 14-bedroom hotel and 44 flats.
Also included in the scheme are 20 light industrial/workshop units, gallery space and a restaurant/cafe. The wharf area around the buildings would be open space with pontoons for small craft and a water taxi stop.
The latest business person to speak out against the plans is Alice Marston, proprietor of Miss Peapod’s Kitchen Cafe on Jubilee Wharf, Penryn. She said: “We cannot allow another unimaginative development to snaffle up the last deep water, all tides access wharf in the county.
“In this time of economic uncertainty, why would you wish to extinguish the potential for future skilled employment?
“Introducing residences to the wharf will permanently prevent the wharf from fulfilling its potential to grow with the future growth of Falmouth port.”
Cornwall Council’s local member for the area, Grenville Chappel, said he is keeping a close eye on developments and is expecting the application to be put before February’s meeting of the council’s strategic planning committee.
