THIRTY-THREE school dance teams from across Cornwall will gather at Penryn Sports College between 2pm and 5pm on Tuesday, February 10 to battle it out in the Street Dance Championship, STEP UP CORNWALL – The Schools.

The competitors, who will include teams from Roseland, Brannel, Treviglas, St Ives, Cape Cornwall, Bodmin, Penryn, Camborne, Callington and Richard Lander, have been busy rehearsing for the event in school classes, clubs and in the community.

Teams of between two and eight dancers will be performing a variety of routines that will be judged on choreography, musical interpretation and performance. The judges will include representatives from Dance Worx, The Big Dance Company and CScape Dance Company.

The teams will also have the opportunity to meet the FLAVA dancers who will be opening the show with one of their routines and a warm up for all the schools.

The event has been organised by Gemma Wilson, Cornwall’s Senior Competition Manager: “Our aim is to make many competitive opportunities for Cornwall’s children” she said. “Dance is a great area where we can get more children interested in school sport.

“ We hope to increase the opportunities across Cornwall, and next year to open up the event to all our primary schools too.”

Kate Loram, from Penryn Sports College will be supporting Gemma with a team of young dance leaders from the school. The winners of the event will receive a coaching session in their school with the FLAVA dancers.
