Review by LISA LLOYD.

It happens to us all once in a blue moon. You make plans to go out at the weekend; expecting nothing special, out of the ordinary or awe inspiring to happen. Events usually take their predicable course and you wake up the next morning full of regrets for a wasted night - not to mention a wasted £50. Occasionally though, you strike it lucky. You stumble across an amazing night that seems to tap right into your soul making you think: "This is it; this is where it's happening right now!"

Well you get that kind of feeling sipping a few delicious cocktails in the newest, slinkiest bar in Truro - the One Eyed Cat - when superb new night Shackup is on. The Shackup DJ's play electric soul, deep funk, Detroit house, b-boy and other black rhythms to an as of yet, unsuspecting crowd at the One Eyed Cat.

The One Eyed Cat - a quirky bar and restaurant in a converted chapel in Truro city centre - suits the Shackup ethos down to a tee. DJ's Shaun Pritchard (Soulicious), Tim Dwelly (Groove Lounge) and Roger Whybrow (Groove Lounge) deliver an eclectic night of music that will appeal to those who want to shake their thang' to some soulful grooves, as well as those who want to kick back and watch the night unfold before them. With a strictly vinyl playlist, the Shackup residents mix the latest beats with underground sounds from the past; creating a truly unique atmosphere in a truly unique venue.

At Shackup the music and venue become one: it's all about the soul. The One Eyed Cat has so much soul it hurts; the dcor and furnishings are achingly bohemian and hip, with deep, sensuous colours throughout the immaculate, airy space. With the arrival of Shackup, drinkers, diners and revellers at the Cat' have the Soulful soundtrack to their evening they deserve in such fabulous surroundings.

Shackup is on every second and fourth Saturday of the month; the next event is on Saturday 13th January. Make sure you get down to the One Eyed Cat to enjoy the best night Truro has to offer. On until late (2amish), amazingly the admission to Shackup is free all night. You can check the website www.shackup.org for more information, play lists and to join the Shackup mailing list to receive updates on future events.
