Experience an evening of intoxicating music performed by The African Jazz Allstars on Thursday 3rd May at Hall for Cornwall.
The 11-piece orchestra of exceptional musicians take the audience on a journey into the music of African cultures and spectacularly fuse together the vibrant rhythms of traditional styles with incredible jazz solos.
The performance will take you back to the roots of many of our contemporary sounds - such as dance music, pop, jazz, rock, rap and blues - which all have their foundations in African and European music. Many of today's musicians and producers - such as Brian Eno - have been profoundly influenced by genres of African music such as Afrobeat - a combination of jazz, and funk rhythms, fused with African percussion and vocal styles.
Other styles being performed by the band include; Soukous, a Congolese Rumba; Mbalax - developed in Senegal and Gambia from the traditional rhythms of the Wolof people and absorbing a Cuban influence; Makosa music defines much of the popular culture in Africa with the music being hard-hitting with a tight, fast-paced rhythm; Hi-life plays a key part in the musical heritage of Africa and incorporates elements of swing, jazz and Cuban rhythms with the emerging guitar styles of West Africa.
Joining the band will be the Queen of African Jazz, Pinise Saul - the voice and leader of the South African Gospel Singers who blends African traditional harmonies and contemporary rhythms to create a passionate style that is uniquely hers.
Together with virtuoso guitarist Lucky Ranku, she has championed the fusion of African rhythms and jazz vocal improvisations for thirty years and performed all over the world for the African National Congress. Major concerts included Boston University Stadium with Bob Marley and Patti La Belle and The Nelson Mandela concert at Wembley Stadium.
Lucky Ranku founder of the African Jazz Allstars is regarded as Africa's greatest jazz guitarist and formed the band to celebrate the many musical styles of Africa. For 40 years, he's been at the heart of South African music and politics and wrote the music to the award winning film 'A Solitary Confinement' as well as featuring in the sound track of the film 'Cry Freedom'.
The performance starts at 7.30pm and tickets are £15.25, £13.25 with concessions available. A 75p Theatre Fund payment is added to each ticket sold. Book now by calling the Box Office on 01872 262 466.
