After a highly successful appearance at this year’s Boardmasters Festival in Newquay, Brighton songwriter Maisie Peters will return to Cornwall with a gig at the Watering Hole in Perranporth on Friday, September 29.
Maisie has just released her first single, Place We Were Made, a strikingly mature yet enduringly naive introduction to the 17 year old evidently grappling with the love/hate relationship over where you are from - or in her words "an Enid Blyton village, with a Co-Op" and the changing outside world you must now navigate.
Having written for as long as she can remember, she even felt bold enough to enter the Guardian's Short Story competition aged 9, with an admittedly terrible submission, it was her voracious appetite for fiction that first offered Maisie a window into alternate realities, in which music may also be reachable.
From F Scott Fitzgerald and Donna Tartt came a love for sometimes bittersweet, sometimes bolshy storyteller-pop, with early influences on her music ranging from Carly Rae Jepson and Lorde to the strong female figures in Maisie's own life: her mother and her polar-opposite twin sister.
Now writing songs and exploring new sounds at a pace befitting a child of the internet, the point in history that Maisie finds herself in has becoming an important backdrop. She said: "On the one hand, there have never been so many opportunities to connect with people or express yourself; on the other there's so much disillusionment with the adults who seem intent on f***ing it up for us."
Maisie Peters will be playing a free, all ages gig at the Watering Hole Support on September 29, with support to be announced.
Doors are at 7pm, support will be on at 7.30pm, and Maisie Peters at 8.30pm.
