Australian Dance Theatre returns to Hall for Cornwall as part of a Dance Consortium Tour with Held - breathtaking and utterly unique it allows the audience to experience movement in a startling and unexpected way.
Under the artistic directorship of Garry Stewart, the company has collaborated with renowned dance photographer Lois Greenfield to create Held, a new stage experience where Stewart's quick-fire ballistic choreography is captured by Greenfield's live on-stage photography and instantaneously flashed on to giant screens.
With extraordinary images projected behind the rocketing dancers, Held provides a unique opportunity to intimately view Stewart's choreography which is technically demanding and fraught with risk.
Held created a sensation when it premiered in Adelaide in 2004, winning six national awards and making ADT the most awarded dance company in Australia that year. The production includes three different styles of photography alongside film and a pounding post-rock soundtrack created by Darrin Verhagin.
Lois Greenfield began photographing dancers over 30 years ago, and her career since has seen her capture the work of many leading companies including English National Ballet, Merce Cunningham Dance Company, San Francisco Ballet, Martha Graham Dance Company and New York City Ballet.
Her association with ADT marks a full circle within her career which began with an early interest in production photography and choreography, before moving towards working with individual dancers and improvised dances. Held marks her return to photographing performance.
Since 1999 Garry Stewart has ensured that his company of dancers train in a multitude of extreme physical forms including martial arts, break-dance, gymnastics, ballet and yoga, as well as contemporary dance. The result is a unique and extraordinary choreographic language with dramatic explosions of flight.
Australian Dance Theatre visits Hall for Cornwall on Tuesday, March 20, and Wednesday, March 21. Performances start at 8pm and tickets are priced £17.25, £15.25 and £12.75 with concessions.
