An exciting new play which tells the true story of the last Gypsies to be hanged in England for the crime of being Gypsies is coming to the Hall for Cornwall on March 7 - thanks to support from the Cornwall's Children's Services Authority.
Killimengro, written and performed by the Romany Theatre Company, tells the dramatic and shocking story of thirteen Gypsies who were tried and hanged by the Bury St Edmunds Assizes in the late 1600's. They were prosecuted under the Vagrancy Acts, introduced under the Tudor and Elizabethan monarchs to combat the "Gypsy Problem".
The play has been brought to Cornwall with support from the Equality and Diversity Service for Children, Young People and Families. "We believe that all individuals have equal worth irrespective of their colour, ethnicity, religion, gender, physical or mental ability, age or sexual orientation " said Ginny Harrison White, Head of Cornwall's Traveller Education Service.
"The Equality and Service provides support for Gypsies, Roma and Travellers and for Bi-lingual learners and is, therefore, delighted to co-promote this production.
The performance, which takes place at 7.30pm, will be multi-lingual, with actors speaking English, Hungarian Romani, Romani, Slovakian and Hungarian, and will include elements of drama, movement and music.
