On Flora Day I spent several hours as a traffic marshal in and around Meneage Street and Trengrouse Way. During this time I had numerous people enquire why the toilets were shut.
I explained that that Helston Council could not afford to keep them open and suggested that they complained directly to the council. To add insult to injury there is a sign pointing to these toilets on the corner. Apart from the people who complained, many others attempted to use the toilets and many men simply used the area surrounding the entrance as a toilet. This is not only unhealthy but quite possibly illegal. There were many children and young people in the area at the time.
Although I understand the issues that led to the closure, more toilets are clearly needed on Flora Day. There are thousands of people in Helston and the town is making a lot of money from these visitors.
Many are elderly and would find it very difficult to get to the other public toilets, which are some distance away, through heavy crowds. Even when you reach them there are long queues and frequent problems. Either these toilets should be open or a number of portable toilets need to be brought in at this end of the town. I would also suggest that there is a sign showing where the nearest toilets can be found.
