MY attention was alerted by the Packet on December 20 to imminent proposals for the expansion of the Helston Tesco and I have had my own thoughts about certain points. I wholly endorse all the points made by Lizard Peninsula Friends of the Earth. I remember Helston as a thriving bustling market town. It is now a ghost of its former image --with diminishing high street shops and private businesses, these being replaced with charity and betting shops, fast food outlets and estate agents.
What shops there are, are gasping to exist in the presence of these larger super stores. Tesco's expansion, if allowed, will certainly put the last nail in their coffin. I do agree that the layout of the internal roundabout and the adjacent pedestrian crossing is hazardous for shoppers, both motorists and those on foot. I certainly hope that Kerrier council will heed the voices of these objections in the interests of local residents and businesses, and not act in favour of a multi-national/international entrepreneur.
