IT is with further dismay that I reluctantly draw your attention to the future ambitions of the discredited Liberal Democrat administration at County Hall. Not content with bringing Cornwall to the brink of financial ruin by their blatant mismanagement of Cornwall's affairs, they aim now to dissolve the relatively efficiently run district councils to form a Lib Dem controlled Cornwall Unitary Authority which they purport will save the hard pressed Cornish taxpayers millions of pounds.
What a load of old cobblers! This is nothing at all to do with keeping council tax bills down, neither is it designed for the betterment of the Cornish people, but simply to get their long snouts on the lucrative booty currently in the ownership of the six Cornish district councils.
Make no mistake this cynical manoeuvre is simply designed to get themselves out of the current self-inflicted financial quagmire.
Rest assured, in the long term that this latest Lib Dem move, like all before it, will end up in turmoil and costing all of us significantly more in future council tax bills. Furthermore, it will be highly damaging to what little remains of our local democracy.
Whatever the outcome, it remains in my opinion the democratic right of the Cornish people to decide the future governance of Cornwall. Unfortunately, it is no surprise that public will not be provided this opportunity. Some democracy!
Graeme Hicks, independent county councillor, Redruth South
