I READ in last week's Packet that planning permission has been granted to relocate Falmouth Rugby Club to Menehay. Reading between the lines I can't help feeling that it is the Falmouth Rugby Club that are behind this very unpopular project to use the "rec" as an expendable pawn to get what they want, and that Carrick have been in bed with Kerrier, working out this wonderful plan, behind closed doors, to relocate the rugby club to Menehay, without any consultation with the Falmouth residents on their opinions to the possible loss of the "rec." I was one of hundreds who attended the meeting when the plans for Menehay were discussed, with the huge majority against the proposed move, and yet Kerrier still voted in favour, despite nearly 100 letters of objection, which makes me believe that Kerrier have carried out their part of this master plan, taking no notice of overwhelming objections, and a classic case of councillors, once again, not listening to the people they are supposed to represent.

For example, after Budock parish council had unanimously rejected the proposed move, why did their representative who sits on Kerrier planning fail to carry out their wishes when it came to the vote? Whatever happened to fair and honest democracy? This is why I fear for those who are campaigning to save the "rec" for future generations, that their valiant efforts, which are supported by thousands of Falmouth residents, may be in vain, and will not be listened to by Carrick, who have already spent vast amounts of taxpayers' money on plans, etc, to carry out their part of this dastardly scheme, making it a done deal, as several people on the street seem to suggest.

I also think that it's about time that Falmouth town and Carrick councillors came out and stated which side of the fence they are sitting on in this very important issue. I would find it very hard to stomach that any Falmouth town councillor who also sits on Carrick, who has any pride in their town and are also the custodians of it, would support this demolition of the "rec," which has been the heart of the town for over 100 years. Is Carrick also telling us that the "rec" is the last space of council-owned land in Falmouth that can be used for housing?

Carrick with the rugby club tried this once before several years ago with a supermarket, which was turned down by Carrick planners, and now they are playing the affordable homes card, which if built, will be very small in number, compared to the more expensive ones. But who cares, as long as Carrick, Kerrier and the rugby club get what they want, at the sacrifice of the "rec," which I believe has been deliberately run down.

The "rec" will not be surrendered by thousands of people in Falmouth who want it to remain and be reinstated to an open sporting and recreational centre for everyone, and because of its central position is within easy walking distance from most parts of the town. I say to the "Save the Rec" campaigners, keep going, the vast majority of the town are behind you.
