I AM writing to record my support to keep the Falmouth Fire Station manned 24-hours a day. I believe it is a service a town like Falmouth needs. Within a five-mile radius of the Fire Station we have Falmouth Docks which operates 24-hours a day, at which unfortunately accidents do happen, along with the Tremough Campus, which almost doubles the resident numbers in Penryn.
During my service in the Royal Navy I served as a firefighter in Wales during the fire service strike of 1977. I therefore feel that I have a vast amount of knowledge of fires and the devastation they cause to families. If there is a reduction of cover at night I would suggest that whoever makes the call to the fire service also books a place at the morgue for the victims as the amount of time it will take for the firemen to respond will probably take at least another 15-20 minutes (not the five minutes the county council believes it will take), as we all know smoke kills and fire spreads very quickl. People will die through no fault of the firemen, just through the stupidity of the county council.
Can any county council members please explain to me how they reached a decision to spend £70,000 on a new carpet at County Hall, £74,000 for bottled water for staff and also give themselves a big pay rise and then save money by putting lives at risk in the Falmouth, Penryn and surrounding areas by cutting the night time cover at Falmouth Fire Station? As far as I am concerned that is the Lib Dems for you!
I would ask everyone to take two actions: firstly write to your town council and register a complaint about the cut in night cover and secondly, in May, get rid of the dominance of the Lib Dem control of town and district councils with a protest vote and then in two years time get rid of the Lib Dem county councillors who puts themselves before the people.
Steve Eva, Falmouth town councillor
