I NOTE that in a recent press report of the Cornwall county council budget meeting that the leader and I differed over our assessment of county staffing levels. I claimed there are 20,000 and David Whalley said there are only 18,609. The difference, as he should have known, is 1,391 casual workers. The oversight is understandable in Cornwall with similar numbers slipping away at RAF St Mawgan, Imerys, etc.

My main input was an amendment to the county budget, which could have removed an executive member. Ideally, this would have been community services, where there has been recent growth, and the work and resources transferred to public protection, where there is a deficit for the Fire Brigade. More specifically this action could have led to the loss of spin doctors and the new county council newspaper.
