I AM not sure if the shy correspondent on the subject of global warming and their worries over what a devious chancellor may use as an excuse for additional taxation (Packet, April 11) would be prepared to concede that whereas both accidental deaths and suicides occur from carbon poisoning, no such seems ever to have been recorded from lungs taking in sea air or water vapour from kettles, the latter sometimes being medicated.
Whatever a chancellor may or may not do in the way of taxation could prove totally inconsequential in years to come if the bulk of scientific opinion proves to be correct on the causes of global warming. With the present day occurrence of skin cancer and possible increase in asthmatics among children, can one really dismiss out of hand claims of a hole in the ozone layer being responsible and the cost of CO2 emissions?
Not so many years ago through industrial and domestic smoke pollution and before the clean air act we had smog, a killer of thousands, something at least one could see, smell, and be aware of.
