I'D like to reply to Miss R L Sampson's letter in this week's Packet. When my mother attended Falmouth Day Centre, run by Age Concern, it cost £18 for the first day - this included a meal and all the other entertainment. Mum loved it. If she went for a second day in the week it was only a few pounds and having a bath was only £9.
Although my sister and I did a lot for mum, she would prefer to have a bath at the day centre than a shower at home - a lady of any age likes to keep her dignity. The people who run this day centre are marvellous, several of them are volunteers. Not only are they supportive to their clients but to the clients families - nothing is too much trouble, believe me this was a great support at a very difficult time. The gentlemen who pick up the clients were always laughing and joking but very caring. My mum looked forward to her days at the day centre and we would have gladly paid more for that alone.
Because of the progression of mum's illness, she moved to Truro in November and was unable to attend the Falmouth Day Centre, which upset her. Shortly after this she had two more stays in Treliske, the second being her last as she passed away in March. If anyone who reads Miss Sampson's letter has a relative about to attend a day centre run by Age Concern, please don't worry, they will thoroughly enjoy it.
