While it may be legal for eastern European workers to come and work in this country, more effort really should be made to teach them about our laws.
Being an avid reader of court cases, I am growing more and more concerned at the number of foreign workers being caught drink-driving. I can only assume that there are no laws to cover this in their own countries and so they are unaware of the situation here. However, it is only a matter of time before someone is killed and as is generally the way, it would most probably be some innocent bystander who pays the ultimate price.
Why are these people not given information regarding our laws on arrival at the airports and ferry ports? It is often said in court that they have no previous convictions but is our legal system able to access their records in their home country? And is drink-driving illegal in their countries?
Something really needs to be done not just to save lives but also to cut costs in terms of police, courts, and I'm assuming legal aid.
