The Skipper is right when he says Cornwall county council should look again at its budget and the effects it is having on frontline services (Packet, August 29). I have urged the council to reconsider where it will make its savings and will continue to do so.

I am sure, however, that the Skipper will agree that Cornwall does not get a fair funding deal from this government and it is my responsibility to raise this with ministers.

Successive governments have squeezed the county's budget whilst requiring the council to do much more. The cake can only be cut so many times and it is inevitable that under the current unfair system, there will be cuts to frontline services.

That is why I will continue to press ministers to look again at the way Cornwall is funded and give us the money we deserve and I will make no apologies for it - as the Skipper seems to imply I should.
