WITH reference to the letter from Mr B Davis in last week's Packet, perhaps I may clear up some misconceptions about the founding of the Falmouth youth club.

In 1947 the Girls' Keep Fit Club organised by Viola Thomas decided to branch out into amateur dramatics, and produced A Midsummer Night's Dream in Fox Rosehill Gardens, having co-opted brothers and boyfriends for the male parts. This led to the formation of the Falmouth youth club, and with the help of Miss M Nicholl JP, Mrs Lillian Rice, Herbert and Elizabeth Starling and John and Connie Styan we were able to occupy the Old Sailors' Hospital in Hulls Lane as our first premises. A committee was formed and Denis Richards was elected as club leader.

We had drama classes and produced plays. The keep fit classes were run by Mr Sid Fearn, there was a lively discussion group and various social activities, both in- and out-door, such as our Good Friday hikes to Durgan beach for the first swim of the season. All this was on a voluntary basis - no grants or subsidies then!

Two or three years later, Denis had to give up the leadership, owing to pressure of work, and quite a few of the original members had moved on for career reasons, or conscription or to get married, etc. At this time the county agreed to fund a paid leader, Mr George Warren, and the club was able to expand and take younger members.

Subsequently, the club had to move to premises in the town quarry and I believe it was at this time that Mr and Mrs Hannaford and Ron Williams were involved. I am sure the work they did was very much appreciated by the club, but they were not founder members.

It is gratifying that our club, started 60 years ago on a shoe-string, is still in operation, and I am sure they will go from strength to strength in their new premises.
