I AM one of the many who were angered and disappointed by the change of use of the Helston recycling/re-use centre to just a recycling centre on "health and safety grounds." The centre at Hayle in no way makes up for the loss of the Helston centre.
I was therefore delighted to find the following on the Richmond, Surrey, council site (on the internet) and am now wondering if, with perhaps some help from Culdrose or other land owner, something similar could not be done in our area? I'd also like an answer to the question of why Richmond seems to have different health and safety legislation to Kerrier!
Log on to http://www.richmond.gov.uk and look for "Give and take day" (under events and notices): "De-clutter your home, or furnish it for free, and help the environment! The next give and take day' is being held at Twickenham Stadium, Rugby Road, on September 23."
The council organised its first "give and take day" in September 2006. This was a free community re-use event, and offered a great opportunity for people to donate unwanted items that were taking up room in the home and garage. Items donated then went on display for others to take and re-use, rather than be thrown away.
The "give and take day" was a huge success with approximately 500 people attending throughout the day and nearly 4,000 items being donated and taken for re-use. In total just under eight tonnes of waste was diverted from landfill.
In the morning residents are invited to bring along unwanted household and garden items that are in good condition. In the afternoon (givers and non givers) then have the option to take what they feel they can re-use from the items available, and it's all free of charge! A qualified electrician is on site to safety test all electrical equipment before it is put out on display.
The council says that nothing will be wasted where possible. The main aim of the day is to re-use unwanted items and reduce the amount of waste that the borough sends to landfill.
