The report of the recent town council meeting that has appeared in the Packet states that I had proposed reducing the precept to zero.
That is clearly not correct. The town council could not continue to operate without the precept; that proportion of the council tax that pays for the services that the town council provides.
What I did propose was that there should be no increase for next year; that the council should live within its means, or more correctly, live within the means of those who pay the council tax, ordinary working families and those on fixed incomes who already struggle to pay.
The old expression "cut your suit according to your cloth" comes to mind. I believe in sound financial management in local government and this was one of the main factors that caused me to stand for election.
