I WORK in a local bar and with the recession on our doorstep, the cold weather and the road closed, the last thing I needed to hear about was the corporate circus, which is Wetherspoon’s reducing beer to one pound a pint.
First point is that it promotes irresponsible drinking, which people get more than their fix and make their way to the clubs including ours, drunk and penniless. Secondly, the way they put up price comparisons of different bars in the area.
Unfortunately we do not have the luxury or buying power to compete, we have door staff who charge very high rates, live music with no door charge entry, atmosphere and food which isn't processed, tasteless and full of salt. Our rent is astronomical and we are tied to a brewery being charged over the norm for beer.
Just a letter to say thank you corporate fat cats for twisting the knife, pushing small honest traders out of the market, promoting irresponsible drinking just in time for us to receive the aggro!
Clever business? No, just another thorn in Falmouth’s side that none of us need Nigel Reed via email
