UNLIKE Mr Sobey of Mullion (January 7) who must be ashamed of his Conservative allegiance, I am proud to declare publicly my support for Andrew George since he first represented us in 1997.

Mr Sobey makes snide comments about parliamentary allowances: Does this Tory activist imagine that MPs who maintain offices in both their constituencies and Westminster, and must travel between them, do so from their salaries?

Setting aside travel and basic accommodation, the biggest expense by far is staff salaries, and incidentally Mr George, unlike the infamous case of the Tory MP who paid full time salaries to his student sons, does not employ members of his own family. Is Mr Sobey telling us that his Tory friends forgo their allowances and meet costs from their own pockets? I don't think so. Perhaps Mr Sobey really does prefer the Tory way – say one thing, do another? Thus, while nationally the Conservatives campaign to protect gardens from developers, it seems that the local branch has sought planning consent for six flats in the garden of its Penzance headquarters – in a conservation area – hoping to line their pockets with nearly £1/4 million if they were successful.

Personally, I will stick with, and by, Andrew George MP.
