We understand that Cornwall county council has scrapped the plan to reverse the traffic flow in the main street of Falmouth after receiving a questionnaire carried out by Liberal Democrats. About 4,000 residents were contacted and over 1,000 replies showed an overwhelming rejection of the scheme, about one in four.

We understand from the traffic department at County Hall that by reversing the traffic flow, the traffic would be reduced by 30%, and the pollution levels would certainly be reduced. If just one more option had been added to the questionnaire asking if a reduction in traffic and consequent pollution would be welcome, no doubt this would have evoked a very different response and outcome of the poll.

Roughly 1,000 replies to an inadequate questionnaire and with the most vital option missing does not accurately reflect the opinion of the majority of Falmouth residents. It would be a serious mistake if decisions have been made on faulty assumptions and lack of information.
