I WELL remember sitting in a church many years ago waiting for the sermon to begin. The vicar walked into the pulpit and looked at his congregation who were wondering just what subject he had chosen that week.
Suddenly he looked up and said: “Sex? You need it, I need it, many people need it.” I cannot remember much more of the said sermon, but it certainly was a talking point for many weeks afterwards.
So too it appears, will be the decision by a Cornwall licensing committee to grant permission for a sex shop in Truro.
Evidently more than 800 people objected to the shop opening in a main street and dread the thought, not far from a trader selling school uniforms.
I am still trying to work out what the fuss is all about. Are the people of Truro blind? Are they not aware that this is the 21st Century? Do they not understand that six-year-olds come home from school nowadays fully aware of the definition of the word sex and what a condom is?
Yet here we have 800 or so people in Truro who want to remain in the 20th Century and not accept the world has moved on.
Most of us could not care a less about the goings on behind the shop doorway of the said sex shop unless we want something from its shelves.
Those objectors who have caused such a furore in the city should remember that most children today have their own computers, most are linked to the internet and if not can do so via their mobile phones. They know more about the subject being treated as taboo than most of us.
No, the vicar was right all those years ago. “Sex, I need it, you need it, everyone needs it.” What’s more, there is no doubt a need for a sex shop. Here endeth the lesson and good luck to shop.
