Derek Gardner. – 1931-2011. The death has occurred and the funeral taken place on Tuesday 25th January at Oakley Wood Crematorium, Warwickshire of Derek Gardner the design engineer whose Formula 1 race cars took Sir Jackie Stewart to two world championships. Derek died at his home in Lutterworth but would have been known in Devon and Cornwall as the son-in-law of local business man and Chairman of Exeter City Football Club, Mr. A. S. Line formerly of Tregenver House, having married Mr. Line’s eldest daughter, Margaret. Margaret and Derek would often visit their father at his hotel, the Palm Beach Hotel, Gyllingvase, Falmouth until his untimely death in 1960. Sir Jackie Stewart led the tributes to Derek at the service and acknowledged the great debt he owed to Derek for his own success and safety, noting his death would be a sad loss to motor racing design.
