A Carnon Downs woman is calling for changes to a “dangerous and difficult” lane plagued by “reckless” drivers.
Maria Carlyon wrote to the Packet because she was frustrated by the amount of traffic and congestion on Smithy Lane in the village.
Motorists are drawn to the lane because of the nearby shop and post office, she said, but some “are not the most polite individuals at times.”
She said: “We have faced dangerous and reckless drivers driving on the pavement, obstruction of the road by large lorries and trespassing on our properties to turn around.”
Peak times for congestion are between 11am and 6pm at Christmas, Easter and throughout the summer according to Maria.
“We live here but it seems that we have no right to access or exit our properties without having to face some of these aggressive drivers,” she said.
“This village is inhabited by elderly people in its majority and I don’t feel that this is the most safe environment for them or any of us.”
Maria claims to have complained to the council, but has been told that nothing will be done “until a fatality occurs.”
She said: “Do we really have to wait for that to happen?”
Cornwall councillor for the area, council leader Jim Currie, said: “My understanding is that some of the residents in Carnon Downs are not happy with the residents from Perranwell and Stithians travelling through the village on the way to Truro.
“The residents asked us to look at closing the bottom of Old Carnon Hill [which shares a junction with Smith Lane] to force traffic across to the A39 at Carnon Gate.”
Feock Parish Council was opposed to these proposals however, Mr Currie said and the scheme was dropped.
“A scheme was put in place to restrict the through movement of HGVs in the whole area by imposing a weight limit. Closing Old Carnon Hill is not part of our plans at the moment,” he added.
