PUPILS from King Charles School in Falmouth had a break from normal lessons in the classroom to have some fun while learning at the Maritime Museum last week.

The year five children, accompanied by teachers Becky Green and Suzanne James, and a handful of volunteer parents, spent the day at the museum as part of their current topic which is looking at the Packet ship service and Tudor explorers.

During the morning the youngsters were faced with a scrap heap challenge when they looked at different boat designs before working in teams to design and make boats of their own. The finished creations were then put to the test on the museum’s boat pool with Brent, Mac and Rory’s boat taking top honours.

After lunch, the children moved over to the museum’s Cornwall Galleries to explore the exhibits and learn more about the Packet ships service. The week before the youngsters had walked The Packet Trail which took them through the streets of Falmouth.

When the children returned to school, they looked at the time line of shipping, from the Tudors to the modern day.

In a fortnight’s time, the pupils will be back at the museum to take part in its Tudor workshops. They will be learning about some of the famous explorers of the day, including Sir Francis Drake, and looking at the places they explored.
