A series of improvement projects to the South West Coast Path costing more than £250,000 has now begun, starting in west Cornwall.

Stage one, a stone pitching project to solve major erosion problems and improve access from Sennen to Land’s End, will see 220 metres of the coast path pitched with granite.

The work is expected to take approximately ten weeks. With costs in the region of £20,000, the South West Coast Path team, National Trust, Cornwall Council and Land’s End Company have pulled together in a team effort to fund and undertake the project.

Stage two will see another 600 metres of stone pitching to complete the path to Land’s End, along with more than 50 other improvement projects throughout this year across the whole of the path.

Funds will be raised through a special event. To celebrate its 40th anniversary, taking place in April and May, The South West Coast Path Association is organising the Great South West Walk .

This will involve a relay of 56 sponsored walks, to cover the whole 630-mile path around Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, as well as the Exmoor coast through Somerset.

Each leg will be guided by local experts, rangers and path wardens.

Registration for the event ends on March 4 .
