A renewable energy company with offices in Truro has been given the go ahead for a 12,000 panel solar panel near Hayle.

The project, from TGC Renewables, promises to create enough power for 796 homes and will "guarantee" the farmer landowner a rental income for the next 25 years, the company said.

Company director Roy Amner said: "We are delighted that after detailed consultation all interested parties, our planning team secured the full support of [Cornwall Council's] Strategic Planning Committee for this development."

Cornwall councillor for the area John Coombe had previously opposed the proposal, saying that solar farms could quickly become a "blight".

The planning application received 16 letters of objection from local residents.

Located approximately 1.6km southeast of Hayle, the project will be constructed on 6.2 hectares (15.3 acres) of class 3b agricultural grazing land.

Using a ground-mounted design, it will feature 198 racking tables which will hold mounted solar panels made up of approximately 12,000 solar modules.

The design also allows for the land to be mixed-use so that the farmer has the option to graze sheep on the site while the solar project is live.

Founded in 2006, TGC Renewables works with farmers, landowners and investors and has already developed 30 MW of large-scale solar projects with in excess of 100MW in the pipeline.
