Plans for a new community centre and housing complex for the elderly at Bosvale in Falmouth will go on public display later next week when everyone is invited to meet those behind the scheme and have their say.

Falmouth Rotary Club has donated the land, between Prislow Fields and Charles Avenue, to the Abbeyfield Society which intends to build an “extra care” facility of 75 apartments and also incorporate a brand new centre for the Bosvale Community Association (BCA).

The complex will also include a restaurant, shop, two lounges, therapy, hairdressing and activity rooms, a meeting room for the Rotary Club, a community garden and communal gardens.

The £11 million scheme was revealed two weeks ago and the public are now being invited to get involved ahead of the formal planning process.

An open day is to be held at the Bosvale Community Centre between 10am and 1pm on April 27 when the plans will be on show and representatives from Falmouth Rotary Club and Abbeyfield will be on hand to answer any questions. Comments and constructive suggestions are invited.

“This is a community development and it will change the dynamics of the community,” said Karin Shipman, secretary of the BCA. “The community centre is very active and they (Abbeyfield) want their aged people to be integrated into the community and use the facilities and use the groups within the centre.

“At the moment people are supportive of the plans, but there will always be, I am sure, people who will grumble. We want to allay their fears and allow them to put their input in.”

The Bosvale Community Centre, which was built in the mid 1970s, is no longer “fit for purpose” and is nearing the end of its life. Without the proposed development, the centre will be closed within two years.

“It was designed for about 20 years so it has done really, really well,” said Mrs Shipman. “We are very, very happy that we are going to get a brilliant new centre and maybe some extras we have been working for for years.

“We are not going to get a centre otherwise. We have tried fundraising, but because we are in town, we are not eligible for half the grants that village halls are eligible for.”

The extra care facility will include around 75, one and two bedroomed apartments - some of which will be for sale and the rest for rent - and will be available for those over the age of 55.
