A growing group of Falmouth businesses and organisations will pull together tomorrow to officially launch an action alliance aimed at improving the lives of those suffering from dementia.
The Falmouth Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) takes its cue from a similar association in Plymouth, which was the first of its kind in the UK two years ago.
By encouraging local businesses and organisations to do at least one thing that will improve the lives of dementia sufferers, the alliance hopes to get more people with the condition out and about in town.
Co-ordinator Bob Bridges, who helped set up the DAA with The Alzheimer’s Society, The Rotary Club of Falmouth and the town’s memory cafe, said: “The problem is that people who live with dementia are reluctant to visit town centres because they think they are unable to cope and that they are not understood.
“Now, that is all changing.”
Falmouth is one of a handful of towns and cities around the country with such an alliance in place.
As many as 200 local businesses and organisations have signed up and agreed to take action, mostly by raising awareness.
Bob said this will “transform the lives of people with dementia” and “change the way we look” at the condition.
Tomorrow (May 22) a launch event will be held at the National Maritime Museum from 10 until 4, with displays and presentations throughout the day.
