Mark Berryman has been re-elected mayor of Porthleven for another year at the annual general meeting of the town council.

Accepting the office for a third term, Mr Berryman said that although he had hoped to pass over the mantle to someone new he had agreed to continue to allow a new deputy to find their feet.

Councillor Danny Williams was subsequently elected as deputy mayor.

It was the first meeting for the council’s two new members, Brian Michael and Liz Lane, who were elected uncontested earlier this month.

Ms Lane, who has lived in Porthleven for the last seven years, said she carried out a lot of work for charity and now hoped to concentrate that work locally.

Mr Michael said he had lived in West Cornwall for almost 40 years and was semi retired, having worked for local government for most of his life.

Currently he provided a clerking service for a number of schools in the area, but he was due to retire fully soon.

The council has, however, lost two of its members in Father Harry Pugh and Katherine Williams, who did not stand for election again.

The AGM gave Mr Berryman the opportunity to thank both former councillors for their work. He said: “Harry was our first ever mayor and I think it’s hard to realise now, it seems so normal to have a mayor.

“Katherine served on this council for 18 years. During that time she served as chairman, was free with excellent advice at all times, was a wise counsel and probably the most fastidious attendee of events. I hope they both enjoy a full and fruitful retirement.”

The council still has two vacancies to fill, which will be advertised in the next couple of weeks.
