One of the Helston area’s longest serving journalists has been honoured at a surprise presentation in Porthleven.
Noel Perry, who has reported from the area for more than 30 years, was presented with a town plaque by Porthleven mayor Mark Berryman. It is one of the highest honours the town council can give.
Noel was joined at the presentation by his wife Dee and Porthleven’s councillors for the presentation at the Atlantic Inn.
The unsuspecting reporter was lured there on the pretence of a council get-together following the elections, but in fact the evening was dedicated to him.
Mr Berryman said: “I can't think of anyone who deserves this plaque more. Noel has covered everything in this village with integrity and the truth. If Noel is sitting in a meeting you know that meeting will be reported well.”
He went on to describe Noel as “one of those rare people” who just wanted to do the best he could and always believed the best in people.
“He’s been great to work with. One of the nicest things is after a council meeting I know on the Friday somewhere between 10am and 11am there will be a phone call, asking me what I ‘really’ meant to say!” joked Mr Berryman. The mayor added: “It’s been a privilege to work with him.”
An overwhelmed Noel responded by saying: “I really appreciate this. Thank you all very much indeed.”
The presentation was followed by a buffet, paid for by the councillors themselves.
