Children at Falmouth Primary School were transported back almost 70 years when they rolled out their very own VE Day celebrations.

The year two pupils have been studying World War II as their topic this term and jumped at the chance to dress up in 1940s gear and make their own union flags and hats out of newspaper.

The youngsters watched a film showing genuine 1945 celebrations which included clips of the royal family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace and Sir Winston Churchill’s speech.

The pupils also learned about the sort of games children would have played such as British bulldog, musical chairs, jacks and hop-scotch.

They also listened to authentic 1940s music and learned the song Oranges and Lemons.

An outdoor “street party” had been planned, but this had to be held indoors after the rain came down.

Before last week’s VE Day celebrations the children had been learning about what it was like to be evacuees and learning about the Blitz. As part of these studies, they enjoyed a trip to Flambards to see its Britain in the Blitz exhibition.

Back in the classroom, they had made their own gas-mask boxes and identity cards and wrote diary entries, imaging what it would have been like to have been sheltering during the Blitz.
