Three new automata in the new play area in Falmouth’s Kimberley Park will be unveiled to the public on Saturday (May 18).
The creations have been made by three local, world renowned automata makers – Rob Higgs, Keith Newstead and Paul Spooner. To celebrate their arrival in the park, an afternoon of fun and games has been planned.
Go along to the park between 2pm and 4pm and be among the first to explore the new automata.
At the official opening event there will be free family workshops, including rope making activities with the Maritime Museum; draw your own automaton design with Victoria Gillow and a chance to win cardboard automata kits. There will also be the opportunity to meet Rob, Keith and Paul. The three new automata are based on a maritime and Falmouth packet ship theme. Paul’s Balletic Goat is a tribute to the gallant crew of the packet ship Antelope; Keith’s Magic Postbox contains a secret sailing ship and letters from packet ship sailors, written by local school children.
Rob’s Sunken Submarine is a clever construction made from recycled old scrap metal, which contains a working ship’s bell and even has moving cannon balls.
“Falmouth is incredibly lucky to have these new automata by such internationally recognised automata makers,” said Jessie Higginson of the Kimberley Park Association.
“The pieces are a fantastic addition to the new play area and we hope they will become much loved and used by visitors of all ages to the park.
“Come and celebrate with us on Saturday May 18 and meet Paul, Keith and Rob – the automata makers.”
This automata project has been funded by Arts Council England National Lottery and has been managed by the Kimberley Park Association.
