The Pentecostal, or Whit Sunday service held on Sunday was also host to the congregations of St Mylor Parish Church and the Flushing and Mylor Methodist churches, many members of whom wore red to depict the flame of the Holy Spirit descending upon the disciples.
The service was led by the Rev Andrew Stevenson and the preacher was the Rev Celia Phillips.
In her sermon she expressed how the Holy Spirit descends on the individual, the church and the world. Although church congregations seem to be rather depleted nowadays, the Holy Spirit can still be seen to be working on the young, the middle aged and the elderly in other places where they meet. All the hymns were to do with the Holy Spirit, including “Spirit of the living God” and “Spirit of God divine”. The Bible reading, taken from Acts chapter 2 v 1–21, was read by John Ollerenshaw and the gospel reading, taken from John chapter 14 v 8–7 and 25–27, was read by Andrew. Dorrit Smith composed and read the intercessions and the organist was Joan Treloar. Mary and James Stevenson and Tom Treloar led the singing.
