Members gave a warm welcome to Angela Hyland, St Austell who was demonstrating for the first time at the club.

Her self-assured performance belied the fact that she had only recently gained her demonstrator’s qualifications and the audience was absorbed in her subject “All things Bright and Beautiful” as she deftly constructed a variety of arrangements using some unusual containers constructed by herself as she reminisced on the trials and tribulations besetting a would-be demonstrator.

She began by reading an amusing poem aptly named the same as her subject title and then commenced on a design to reflect the spring season using a nest effect of scrunched clematis stems intertwined with rubus leaves. Using a variety of foliage she then grouped various colourful spring flowers including tulips, hyacinths and camellias to good effect.

All nests have an egg and Angela used two containers of candle wax to represent the broken shells which held delicate arrangements of white lilies, freesias, gypsophilia and cream roses. Another unusual container turned out to be a length of black drainpipe which could easily be extended if required and a simple continental design of yellow blooms completed the eye-catching arrangements.

A pair of dainty baskets, handmade from rolled paper, were a picture of perfection with posy style arrangements in subtle shades of pink, purple and plum blooms and a vivid contrast to another design topping a striking tall amber glass container. Here Angela had made a hanging framework of green medilino sticks and diamante wire and the arrangement of simple vertical and horizontal lines of gerbera, roses and spray carnations of the same orange hue made a striking sight.

Angela brought the evening to a close with a pedestal arrangement using contrasting green and red blooms including orchids and setting a smaller one at the base. She also judged the competition presenting Sylvia Ollerenshaw with the cup.

The next meeting will be held on June 3 at the Ord Statter Pavilion at 7.30pm when Vera Vigus from Redruth will share her ideas of “Shades of Summer” and will judge the competition of the same name.
