The May meeting fell on Flora Day, May 8. It had been agreed previously that this meeting should be informal, without a speaker, hence giving more time to the members who could attend time to exchange their points of view on the current topics presented by secretary, Jill Blunn.
The first lively discussion was regarding the resolution for the 2013 campaign “Tackling the decline of our high streets and town centres”. For and against arguments were put forward and members voted almost unanimously for the resolution.
In a recent letter sent to all WI secretaries, the Federation stresses that a decision will have to be made regarding the future of Denman College which has incurred a very large deficit. We all felt strongly that consideration should be given to the sale of the national headquarters in London and the money used to establish one only flagship for our Federation in Denman. It is situated in the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside in its own extensive grounds. Extensions could be added to provide additional offices. A fish supper was then enjoyed followed by the usual business.
Last month our quiz evening held in the Harbour Inn raised £110 for our charity. We are all looking forward to a strawberries and champagne evening at the home of president Maureen Williams on Wednesday, July 7. Jill Blunn reported on the Annual Spring Countdown held at the Hall for Cornwall on Wednesday, April 10. Next meeting is on Wednesday, June 12 when our speaker will be Peter Laris on the restoration of Heligan Gardens.
