The May meeting was well attended and everyone was welcomed by president Fay Iliffe. Mary Johnson acted as secretary in the absence of Margot Saul.
Seven members who had been to Caerhays reported on their very enjoyable visit. The next occasion planned will be an evening in Porthleven at Kota Kia - a film show with refreshments and at least 14 members will attend. Members were reminded of the Open Gardens event on June 23 in aid of the proposed Godolphin Village Association.
There followed a discussion on the resolution which will be put forward at the AGM in London next month. This expresses concern at the decline of our high streets and calls on decision makers to work collectively to ensure that high streets flourish and provide a focal point for local communities. Most people were in favour of this resolution but some felt that this was too little too late and abstained.
Jenni Lennigan then spoke to us about flower arranging and gave useful tips on how to prolong the life of flowers by “conditioning”. After a couple of demonstrations it was the turn of members to have a go. Flowers were provided to add to greenery brought by members and Jenni circulated and gave each member helpful advice on their creations.
The competition for a buttonhole was won by Ann Gray.
Members will learn about the Helston Food Bank at the next meeting on Thursday, June 13. This will be in the Methodist schoolroom and begins at 7.30pm.
