The elegant motor yacht Dona Amelia arrives back in local waters next week when she berths at the docks.
In 2011 the 1929-built Dona Amelia underwent a four-month refit at the Pendennis Shipyard complex. Now she is expected to be going up the River Fal to lay-up.
Millionaire yeast producer Max C Fleischmann had the iconic yacht built by Krupp Germania Werft, calling her Haida. When completed, the Haida sailed from Germany to New York, then through the Panama Canal to California.
The vessel was constructed to be especially strong so that it might serve for long scientific, fishing or pleasure cruises in the Pacific waters off the Californian coast. Using the latest technological developments, the vessel was equipped with the twin diesel engines that still propel her to this day.
During World War II the yacht was sold to the US Navy who renamed her USS Argus.
Her other owners included British politician Loel Guinness and film producer Robert Stigwood. She has also been called the Sarena, Roskenkavalier and Haida G during her chequered career. Under the command of local man Julian Legg, she featured in the film Mamma Mia.
