Shoppers at a Penryn supermarket have helped give their community pool a boost by voting with special tokens as they do their weekly shop.

The swimming pool at Penryn Junior School has been the centre of a fundraising campaign over the past few years to help refurbish, repair and improve the facilities.

Built more than 35 years ago with the help of a group of local businesses and parents, the 100 sq metre pool is used by a host of schools across the area and costs £100,000 a year just to maintain.

This latest funding boost of £200 comes as part of the Asda Community Life programme, which encouraged supermarket shoppers to vote for their favourite local good cause by placing green tokens into a specially designed “totaliser”.

Sandra Wilkinson, who is spearheading the pool fundraising campaign, said the donation was brilliant because it showed “the parents and grandparents of the children” were really behind the project.

“There’s been a real buzz in the school because we put it in the school newsletter and all the kids have been telling their mums when they go shopping,” she said.

The money will go towards a new porch for the pool, Sandra said, to help the building retain heat and keep out of the worst of the weather.
