A chance to broaden cultural horizons and practice their French presented itself to year ten students at Mullion School when 50 students from Le College de la Croix Rouge in Brittany visited for the day.
Contact between the two schools had already been established following recent visits to Mullion School by two teachers, Laurent Bescond and Mathieu Hall, from La Croix Rouge, and through a penfriend scheme which ran when both sets of students were in year nine.
The French group took a day away from their short stay at an adventure centre in Tavistock to spend a day at Mullion School and to find out a little bit about English schools and make contact with the students with whom they have been building relationships.
Following the party’s arrival, French and English students divided into three groups, one for a textiles project, one for cake making and one for sports. After lunch in the school canteen, all the pupils gathered for a mixed team tug-of-war competition.
The morning cakes were eaten, and after watching the firing of the Civil War cannon, the guests left.
Stuart Fordyce, head of languages at Mullion School said: “We were delighted to offer young people from different countries the chance to spend time together in what turned out to be a day of positive attitudes, good humour and friendship.”
