We have all heard the stories of firefighters being called out to rescue cats stuck up trees, but yesterday morning the fire service were in action helping one lucky seagull in Falmouth.

They were called out to the stricken bird at 10.15am.

Firefighters put a ladder up against New Look's building along Falmouth's main street and scaled the three storeys to where the seagull had become trapped in netting.

A cat carrier was used to bring it down to safety.

Richard Keast, from Falmouth Fire Station, said they had been contacted by the RSPCA after someone in a flat opposite New Look had spotted the entangled gull.

"It's the first one we have done for ages," he said, "but with the season coming in and more and more netting going on top of roofs now as well, it can become a problem."

The birds often go unnoticed and this one had been caught in the nets for "at least a full day," Richard said.

After the rescue, it was left in the care of a representative from the RSPCA who took it to a vets for a once over.

At the last report, the gull wasn't thought to have suffered any major injuries.

The RSPCA often work closely with fire and rescue services around the country - helping many stricken pets and farm animals affected by last summer's floods, for example.
