Visitors and locals like will have a chance to enjoy the wildlife of the Helford River as part of a boat trip upriver on Saturday, June 22.

This annual cruise, organised by the Helford Marine Conservation Group, will include information from local experts as well as displays and children’s activities.

It means people of all ages can learn about the unique life in this special marine environment.

Highlights of previous cruises have been the egrets and herons, while anyone who is unsure of the difference between a cormorant and shag will be able to find out.

With live rock pool tanks on board there will also be the opportunity to examine the local marine life in detail.

The Helford is a nursery for many species of fish, including bass.

The boat leaves from the Ferryboat Inn jetty at Helford Passage, on the North Shore, at 3pm and travels out to the mouth of estuary.

It then turns and travels as far as Gweek before returning to Helford by 6pm.

Weatherproof clothing and binoculars would be useful to take along.

Tickets cost £8 for adults and £4 for under-18s. Advanced booking is essential, as the event sells out fast.

Cheques should be made payable to “Helford Marine Conservation Group” and sent, with a SAE for the tickets, to Sue Scott, Little Helland, Treverva, Penryn TR10 9BP marking the envelope ‘Cruise’.

The Helford Conservation Cruise has been running since 1994 and the event, with an introduction by naturalist Chris Packham, was filmed in 2010 and can be found on YouTube, under Your Shore at Helford VMCA by Cornwall Wildlife Trust.
