The Dracaena Centre in Falmouth has a new sports development officer who is keen to spread the word on what is on offer at the community centre and attract more people through its doors.

Brad Bodinnar, who replaces Jamie Tresidder who left to take up a new role with Cornwall College, has a sports science degree and has worked in sports development for the past decade with Coventry County Council, Stratford-Upon-Avon District Council and Rugby Borough Council.

“Since moving to Cornwall, I wanted to get into sports development here, but opportunities are few and far between so I’ve been waiting for the right position to become available,” said Brad.

“I feel very lucky to be in this position and think I have hit the ground running.”

Brad is hoping to encourage more people to use the centre and take up a new sport. “People have the idea that the Dracaena Centre is only for the football,” he said.

“That is a big part of what we do, but we do a lot more than that and have big potential to do even more but if people don’t come in, we cannot find out what they want.

“The Dracaena Centre has the potential to be a community leisure centre. At the moment, the weekend useage is really low for sports. Halls are available so we can put things on and make things happen if we know what people want.”

To help spread the word, the centre is making more use of its Facebook page and is adding to it every day in the hope of attracting feedback and more visitors to both the site and the centre itself.

“We want people to realise it’s not the youth club any more and it’s not the community centre for Old Hill, but for the whole community,” said centre manager, Richard May. “We want people to realise that what is going on here is for everybody in Falmouth and Penryn
