Flushing and Mylor Pilot Gig Club are working with Truro College to give young people the chance to try gig rowing.
The joint initiative will result in a number of Learn to Row courses, targeting students the college who have little or no experience of gigs.
The project, which has the full support of British Rowing, will also develop regular gig rowing sessions at Flushing and Mylor Pilot Gig Club for students who have completed the introductory course and for those who already have some knowledge of the sport.
Truro College academy coordinator Julie Penprase will also be developing a Pilot Gig Rowing Academy for students who are keen to compete in the sport, as part of the partnership programme.
Julian Wills, Truro College sports maker, said: “Working in partnership with local community clubs is a key objective of the college, and the forming of such relationships is essential to creating sustainable sports opportunities for our students. Flushing and Mylor Pilot Gig Club have a team of extremely committed and enthusiastic volunteers who we are delighted to be working with.”
The new initiative has been made possible through a successful Sport England bid for two new plastic gigs and equipment. The new gigs are currently being made and should be delivered to the club in the next month.
The new project will see almost 300 young people experience the sport during the next four years.
