Falmouth Town AFC will be playing a charity football match this Saturday (June 1) as part of fundraising in memory of schoolgirl Chloe Edwards.
The eight-year pupil of St Francis School lost her battle against cancer in January last year.
To celebrate Chloe’s life by way of a lasting memorial, a committee from the school has now been set up to raise funds for a pirate themed play area at the school.
Sam Banks, from the Pirate Ship for a Princess committee, asked the club whether a football match could be held to boost funds – and the club did not hesitate in its agreement.
With its home ground at Bickland Park out of action, due to renovation works on the pitch, Falmouth School was approached and they readily agreed to provide Union Corner as the venue. Falmouth Youth Section uses this pitch and Jon Pollard has supplied the posts and nets.
Special dispensation has been given by Cornwall County Football Association, as by FA rules all 11-a-side games should be played by May 31.
Sam and her fundraising committee have been working hard to raise a team of players consisting of dads and friends of St Francis School, with Wayne Brown, a former Falmouth Town player, among their line-up.
Shane Clarke has offered to manage the team and both managers will don pirates outfits, donated by Party Zone in Falmouth.
Martin “Mad Dog” McGee is compiling the opposition, with the hope that some familiar faces such as Sea Flynn, Ian Grant, Wayne Hughes, Matt Pierce and Matt Drummond will be making an appearance.
Kickoff is at 2.30pm, with entry costing £3 for adults and £1 for children, and programmes on sale for £1. Refreshments will be available on site and food is available in the clubhouse afterwards.
The match will end with a trophy presentation and a raffle.
Talks are also underway about a fundraising event to be held in the clubhouse in the near future, with more details to be revealed in due course.
Suzie Williams, from the club, said: “It is really important as a community football club to support causes like this. Please bring your families along to support this fantastic day.”
Last month a quiz night held in aid of Clic Sargent raised more than £1,000.
