Sunday lunch is a big thing for many people – so why not tie it in with a Big Lunch event taking place in Helston and Porthleven this weekend.
This Sunday (June 2) will see people joining for lunch together, as part of an initiative originally started by the Eden Project.
In Helston the Big Lunch will take place at the Old Cattle Market community hall, between noon and 3pm.
It is free for everyone arriving before the food runs out and there will be activities for children, including a bouncy castle.
Pasties, fruit and cream teas will be available, with hot and cold drinks provided, although people are also encouraged to take along their own food to enjoy.
The lunch is being hosted by a team from KingsGate Church Helston, a new local church that meets every Sunday at the Old Cattle Market.
Pastor Steve Carruthers described it as a “fantastic idea to get behind,” adding: “At KingsGate Church we are fully committed to strengthening our community in any way we can. We look forward to seeing everyone and helping to make it a ‘big lunch’ to remember. First come, first served!”
Meanwhile in Porthleven a lunch will also be taking place between noon and 3pm, hosted by Porthleven Community Group.
This will be held on The Moors playing field, behind Costcutter – although if poor weather prevents this, people will meet at Porthleven Public Hall instead.
Everyone is invited to take along a picnic and join in the fun. There will be various craft activities to keep young and old amused, as well as games of rounders and football for those feeling particularly energetic.
There will also be a performance from Porthleven School’s signing choir.
Katie Thurston, secretary of the group, said: “Porthleven Community Group aims to organise fun, social events to get the people of Porthleven together.
“We hope to see you on June 2 and don’t forget your picnic, a picnic blanket or chairs to sit on and – optimistically – your sun cream!”
For more information about the group the Big Lunch visit its Facebook page or contact Katie on secretary@porthlevencommunitygroup.co.uk or 07985 458978.
Now in its fifth year, the aim of the Big Lunch is to get as many people as possible across the UK to have lunch with their neighbours once a year in a simple act of community, friendship and fun.
