The official title for the Regatta has been revealed as ‘Falmouth – Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta’ and the Packet Media, publishers of Packet newspapers, has been officially announced as the Falmouth media partner for next year’s Tall Ships event.
The Packet will be the first with all the tall ships news whether it is in the newspaper, on the website www.thepacket.co.uk, the Packet Facebook page or on Twitter @thepacket.
The Packet has agreed to manage advertising in the official event programme, a percentage of which will contribute to event costs and there will be a series of weekly articles in the paper running up to the event to keep everyone up to date with developments.
Packet editor Paul Armstrong said: “I am delighted that Packet Media has been chosen as the Falmouth media partner for the Falmouth - Royal Greenwich Tall Ships 2014, a role the paper fulfilled the last time the tall ships were in Falmouth in 2008.
“The Falmouth Penryn Packet has a long association with the maritime history in Falmouth going back to the packet ships that used to ply their trade between the port and America. Becoming the Falmouth media partner for the Falmouth - Royal Greenwich Tall Ships 2014 reinforces that tradition.”
John Hick, Chairman of the Falmouth organising committee adds “We are very pleased to welcome the Packet Media on board again as supporters of this major event and fully appreciate the tradition of this local newspaper supporting Tall Ships.
“This is an exciting collaboration, we welcome the opportunity to work with the Packet Media and in particular their enthusiasm and commitment towards the event”.
Up to 50 ships will gather in Falmouth, including a number of the impressive Class A square-rigged vessels, for three days of festivities, before the race starts on Sunday, August 31.
The large square-rigged vessels will be berthed at Queen’s Wharf in Falmouth Docks and will be open to the public from 28th to 30th August.
The fleet of Tall Ships and training vessels from around the world will welcome visitors on board for a step back in time for an insight into our maritime heritage.
Since the Tall Ships first visited Falmouth in 1966, the port has hosted the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta in 2008, the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race in 1998 and The Tall Ships Race in 1982.
The economic impact of the 2008 event left a lasting impression on the area, attracting 100,000 visitors and generating over £12 million for the local economy. Packet Media will also be working with community radio station Source FM to keep everybody up to date with the latest news. Make sure you follow @thepacket on Twitter using #tallships2014.
