WENDRON 0 ST AGNES 4
AFTER a much-improved run of results in the Jolly's Combination League, Wendron were dealt a hammer blow with this 4-0 trouncing by St Agnes.
The scoreline itself did not really reflect the pattern of the game, but it was the visitors that made the most of their chances to rack up an impressive win.
Playing with the strong wind behind them in the opening half, Wendron dominated the early stages, but it was the visitors who took the lead in the 15th minute through a bizarre goal.
Tom Benny whipped a cross into the box which defender Joe Cooper met with an attempted clearance to touch. The ball caught in the wind and soared up into the air and then blew back over the defender and goalkeeper Bryan Scoffin for a freak goal.
St Agnes rarely ventured out of their own half, but in the 27th minute they doubled their lead when a quick break saw Martin Dunstan deliver a cross into the box that the diving Justin Andrew missed with his head but not his shoulder as the ball rolled into the corner of the net.
Wendron had their chances with Steve Kellow and Mark Pope having good efforts well saved by goalkeeper Lee Mitchell.
Playing against the strong wind in the second half Wendron hoped to exploit any gaps that may have appeared to get back into the game. However, that strategy disappeared as early as the 50th minute when the visitors snapped up a third goal. Tom Osborne's corner was met by Shane Cameron who made no mistake by drilling his shot into the top corner of the net.
The home side still attempted to play football in a bid to work their way back into the game, but despite Mike O'Neill and Pope going close there was plenty of effort but no end product.
St Agnes completed a miserable afternoon for the home side when they grabbed a fourth goal five minutes from time when Andrew and Osborne linked up to set up Steve Kemp.
He scored with a fierce drive from the edge of the box with the ball going into the net off the underside of the bar after Scoffin had got a hand to the shot.
Manager Steve Webber was not happy with the performance: "After some good results in our recent matches this was obviously a very disappointing result for me and the players.
"We have been playing well and creating chances, but I felt for some reason we didn't have the same desire as we had in those games.
"We were lacking in spirit and didn't appear that interested in getting a result, but hopefully we can put that behind us and get back on track against Perranporth on Saturday.
